About fluconazole

What does it do?

Thrush is a fungal infection, commonly caused by a type of yeast called candida. Although candida is naturally present in the body, an imbalance can trigger thrush symptoms. Fluconazole 150mg (also known as Diflucan and other brand names) kills certain types of fungi and restores your body's natural balance.

Taking fluconazole for the first time

Fluconazole treatment for thrush is simple - just one capsule to be swallowed with a glass of water. You can take this medicine at any time of day, with or without a meal.

How effective is it?

Women taking fluconazole should see an improvement within a few days. Some women will notice improvement in 24 hours.

For men, the condition can take a little longer to clear up. The symptoms should clear up within a few days, although this can take up to a week.

If your condition hasn't cleared up within one week, you should consult a doctor.

Cautions when using fluconazole

Thrush is an infection which can occur without sexual contact, so it is not a sexually transmitted disease. However, the infection can be passed on during sex, so it is recommended that you should not have sex until the infection has cleared up.

If you regularly suffer from thrush, then it's advisable that both you and your partner have thrush treatment at the same time.

Taking too much can make you unwell, so contact your doctor or nearest hospital immediately if you take more than you should.

  • Suffer from heart disease, including heart rhythm problems.

Dr. P. C. Lee, an infectious disease specialist from the Centre for Clinical Research in the UK, reviewed this recent review and concluded that fluconazole is a safe and effective medicine for the treatment of vaginal candidiasis. Lee adds that the use of fluconazole for the prophylaxis of candidiasis has been extensively studied and is usually effective against both the fungus and the host. However, it is essential to use fluconazole as directed and for the full course of treatment as it is usually not recommended for use in children under 18 years of ageexcept under doctor supervision.

The most common side effects of fluconazole in adults were reported in a clinical trial in adults with a mean duration of use of one day. In a retrospective review of patients with vaginal candidiasis who used fluconazole (150 mg) for up to one year, the side effects were reported as follows: nausea, fatigue, vomiting, headache, and myalgia (an uncommon rash). Headache (1), abdominal pain (1), and skin rashes (1-3) were reported in less than 1% of patients. The incidence of skin rashes was reported in less than 1% of patients. In a case control study of patients with vaginal candidiasis who used fluconazole (150 mg) for a year, more than 3% of patients developed skin rashes. The risk of developing skin rashes was higher when the fluconazole was administered for a year than when the fluconazole was administered for the entire duration of the study. These skin rashes were usually superficial (1-2 mm) and were mild to moderate in severity. Skin rashes were more likely to be classified as superficial (≤2 mm) compared with more severe skin rashes (≥2 mm). In the context of clinical trials, the incidence of superficial skin rashes was slightly higher in patients administered fluconazole for a year compared with patients administered fluconazole for the entire duration of the study. However, this risk may have been more significant in patients treated for a year or more than longer treatment periods.

In a retrospective case control study of patients with vaginal candidiasis who used fluconazole (150 mg) for a year, the incidence of skin rashes, an uncommon rash, was reported in less than 1% of patients. The most common skin rash was erythema, characterized by redness of the skin, sweating, and altered mental status. The rash was also reported as a rash with fever, chills, and fatigue.

Although fluconazole is an effective treatment for vaginal candidiasis, it is essential to be aware of the potential side effects. In addition, the use of fluconazole for the prophylaxis of candidiasis has been extensively studied and is usually effective against both the fungus and the host.
